M.G.Radhakrishnan has barely stepped into the fifth decade of his life ; though from a lifespan perspective he is 51 years young, in matters pertaining to the fourth estate, MG is a seasoned pro. Whatever be the criteria chosen to calibrate his professional merit, whether it be the extent of experience, areas of interest, posts held or awards won, he stands out as a veteran scribe.
He is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the highly prestigious India Today magazine with a readership of over 20 million, a coveted post he has been holding for the past 16 years. He is one of the very few newsmen in Kerala who are at home in both English and Malayalam, handling both with equal ease and consummate fluency. Thanks to his perfect command, he was able to shuttle effortlessly between the two, undertaking important assignments in both languages ; he took up his pen for the 1st time as sub editor of Minerals and Metals Review, later moving on to the Malayalam daily Mathrubhoomi, where he worked from 1982-1994.
In a rewarding career stretching over 30 years, he has scaled up the ladder of his profession, mounting from cub reporter to the higher rungs, with noteworthy positions notching the path of his ascent :Chairman, Kesari Journalists Trust ; President, Kerala Union of Working Journalists,; Faculty, Institute of Journalism, Press Club .
M.G.Radhakrishnan specialized in Economics in College, but he seems to have a ‘blanket coverage’ approach to topics; his special interest areas are extensive to the point of being exhaustive, with politics, culture and films figuring conspicuously at the top of the list. The economics post graduate who is a political analyst has written books on Popular culture ‘Damshtrayum Nettikkannum Theliyumpo’ and translated Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s articles ‘Premam Bhayam Sangeetham’.
His all- inclusive interests and dual language proficiency along with his dedication, unbiased approach, resilience and resourcefulness have helped him to hew out a niche in the terrain of journalism ; the very same qualities made him vault over the confines of ‘press corps’ and explore the complementary territories of Cinema and Television. He was the Jury Member, Kerala State Film Awards Committee for Best book on Cinema in 2000 and Jury member, Kerala State Television Awards Committee for Best Writing on TV in 2001 & 2006.
His knowledge of Cinema, craft in reporting, and panache as a TV interviewer saw awards making a beeline for his mantle piece : he won the State Award for Development Journalism, the K Balakrishnan Prize for Excellence in Journalism ; the Kerala State Film Award for Best Writing on Cinema and the Best Television Interviewer instituted by Centre For Media Studies.
M.G.Radhakrishnan’s track record is enviable; but the articulate and self assured journalist with his unflappable temperament, piercing gaze and deep baritone has what it takes to conquer many more worlds, before he lays down his pen.
