B.Unnikrishnan picked up the ABC of film production from the vantage point of scripting. An excellent scenarist, he made an enviable entry onto the cinematic stage with the script and screenplay of the award winning short film Jalamarmaram followed by Sivam starring Biju Menon and The Tiger with Suresh Gopi in the lead.
This first hand viewpoint gave him an opportunity to see at close quarters the translation process which adapted the written words of the screenplay into the language of the visual medium through the grammer and syntax of cinematography and editing.
With the confidence gained from the experience, he was ready to slip into the driver’s seat ; he made his directorial debut with the Suresh Gopi starrer Smart City . Though it didn’t create much of a ripple, it had a fair to middling showing at the box office. Undaunted by the pedestrian run of his maiden attempt, he roped in Mohanlal for his next venture, pairing him with Kavya Madhavan for the first time. Madambi reaped it rich at the turn stiles, brought Unnikrishnan back into contention and posted his name in the list of young directors to watch out for.
Though all his stories are taut and well scripted, the thriller seems to be his forte . His first three films, Sivam, The Tiger, Smart City fell in this genre and he returned to familiar ground for his 3rd foray. IG Inspector General didn’t distinguish itself and played snakes and ladders with his career, pulling his graph down a bit. Pramani in which he teamed up with Mammoty didn’t prove to be the hit that it was expected to be.
With his next film the Thriller based on the sensational Paul Muthoot murder case almost over and a couple of others queuing up in the pipeline, B Unnnikrishnan has proved that the hand that wields the pen can just as easily hold the megaphone. |
