MANI RATNAM
Yet another classic from the pioneer of Indian films Mani Ratnam, Dhalapathy, has in it a constellation of South Indian film icons. The story revolves around an orphan Surya (played by Rajnikanth), abandoned by his mother soon after his birth, Surya grows up as a street boy amidst violence and devoid of any love or care.
But soon he joins up with the landlord, Devarajan, and becomes his loyal Dalapathy, chief of his group. For the first time in his life he experiences the love of a family there. Together they administer the entire community and give little regard to the law and authority of the place. But things start changing after a new collector takes charge there.
Then follows a series of conflicts between the law and the self proclaimed law, at the peak of which Surya meets his long lost mother and realizes that the collector is his own brother. Caught between his devotion to Devarajan and his intense desire for motherly affection, Dalapathy offers a thrilling experience to the viewers.
Not to mention the wonderful cinematography of Santhosh Sivan and the striking music of Ilayaraja, Dhalapathy will surely be a treat on Christmas for the spectators.
