Thaniye in Malayalam means alone.  This award winning telefilm tells the story of a young Malayalee women who faces an ever descending cycle a loneliness.  

The central character Padma works in a parcel company. She comes from a family steeped in financial despair. Having lost her mother in childhood she lives with her father and only sister who have become completely dependant on her earnings. Her only solace is her relationship with a man who also works in the parcel company. 

Padma’s trouble world turns upside down with the death of her lover’s only sister, making it necessary for him to leave the company in order to take care of his niece. Things continue to grow even darker for Padma as she discovers that her sister has run away with a man, leaving her father all alone. She makes a finale decision to accept her fate, stay with her father and care for him the rest of her life.  But providence denies her even this last vestige of companionship when her father suddenly dies, leaving her now utterly alone. A touching story brilliantly acted and directed with acute sensitivity. Keep your handkerchiefs close by.
