MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Indian pistol shooter Samaresh Jung missed his chance to break Ian Thorpe and Susie O'Neill's record of six gold medals when he lost a three-way shootout at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.
Jung had already won five golds and needed to win his last two events to set a new record total of seven but was just off target in the men's 25 metre centre fire.
Jung finished tied with Singapore's Shaw Ming On and New Zealand's Gregory Yelavich after the three scored 578 points out of a possible 600.
Jung was eliminated after the first five shots of the shootout, scoring 47 points to On and Yelavich's 48.
On and Yelavich were still tied after another round of five shots before On claimed gold after a third round.
Jung admitted the thought of winning a record seven golds had played on his mind during the shootout but still has a chance to win a sixth gold in Saturday's 25m standard pistol.
O'Neill and Thorpe, both Australians, each won six gold medals in swimming. O'Neill set the record at Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and Thorpe matched it at Manchester in 2002.
"It did come into my mind before the final," he said. "But we'll see what happens tomorrow."
On provided Singapore with their second gold medal of the Games.
"It was so tense out there," he said.
Cypriot Andri Eleftheriou won the women's individual skeet in a four-way shoot-off with Australians Lauryn Mark and Natalia Raham and England's Pinky Le Grelle.
Mark finished with the silver and Le Grelle the bronze.
"The spectators got what they paid for today ... the standard was so high," said Mark. "To have a shoot-off for gold, silver and bronze, that's the hardest it gets."
Gagan Narang gave India with their 12th shooting gold medal when he won the men's 50m rifle 3 position title.
Narang, who had already won three golds on the range this week finished just ahead of his team mate Abhinav Bindra. Australia's Ben Burge was third. |
