Gayathri comes from excellent choreographic stock.
She is the daughter of the celebrated Raghuram Master, a frontiersman in the art of film choreography who is now celebrating his golden jubilee in films after having made almost every star in the Tamil film industry traipse to his commands.
The niece of Kala Master, National Award Winner for choreography, who has dance directed her way through 3600 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malyalam, Hindi, Oriya, Bengali etc, Gayathri is also the grand niece of DR. Padma Subramaniyam, the foremost exponent of Bharatanatyam in India today.
To no one’s surprise, Gayathri took to dancing and choreography the way a fish takes to water right from her toddle days.
But her enticing good looks fetched her unturndownable offers from all the four South Indian film industries - Nakshatra Kannulla Rajakumaran, Avanudoru Rajakumari in Malayalam, Charlie Chaplin, Vikadan ,Vistle in Tamil Manasellam Ninee in Kannada and Reppalalo Radha etc in Telugu.
She made the entire Tamil film industry sit up and take notice of her, with a single dance step that called for incredible physical elasticity in her debut film, Charlie Chaplin.
Kamalhaasan, a close friend of her father advised her not to sign films indiscriminately, but to select only those roles that gave her plenty of scope for acting- a piece of advice she follows diligently .
Her pedigree made her try her hand in choreography as well and today she is continuing her father’s tradition; recently she directed Salman Khan’s steps in the Hindi version of Pokkiri.
Offers from other films, including Malayalam are pouring in for the first and only actress-choreographer in Indian films today, who can make any song come alive through her choreography.
At the Super Dancer stage, she exhibited all the benefits of her heritage, never missing a single step or move of the contestants. Some of her comments were eye-openers for the competitors and their choreographers, who were all ears when she delivered her assessments. |
