When Biju Narayanan made an impressive entry into the playback scene with ‘ Pathu Veluppinu’ in 1993, his rich voice drew immediate comparisons with the unmistakable baritone of Yesudas himself. The debutante couldn’t have received a greater compliment of his talent than this similarity.
Biju Narayanan grew up in an atmosphere laden with music, since both his mother & sister were good classical vocalists. He learned his musical alphabets at his mother’s knee and studied the Carnatic musical language in depth under the tutelage of Sankara Warrier and later Aryanad Sadasivan. The first prize he won in the M.G.College Light Music Competition brought him to the notice of the veteran music composer, Raveendran who offered him a break in ‘Venkalam’. Biju, who was still a degree student seized the opportunity with both hands & rose to the occasion ; from then on offers have been pouring in a steady stream, with a dozen of the numbers becoming instant hits : ‘Marivillin’ ( Summer in Bethlahem) , ‘Sooryanayi Thazhuki en Achane’ ( Satyam Sivam Sundaram) & the all time favourite ‘Kalabham Tharam’ (VadakkumNathan). The Tamil, Telugu & Kannada film industries too evinced keen interest in the gifted young man with the golden voice and soon his songs resounded over the whole of the South.
Even before his foray into films he had already made a mark in devotional music. He began by singing tracks for the established singers , but his talent was so obvious he was soon rendering his own devotional songs; he cut his first solo album in 1992 a full year before his induction into film s. He has sung for Hindu, Christian & Muslim albums, the most popular being ‘Archanapoo’, ‘Devageethangal’, ‘Padmatheertham’ etc. He has lent his voice to drama & TV serial songs as well. He won the best Male Singer Singer in the State Drama Awards & the Critic’s Award for the title song in the serial Kayankulam Kochunni . His calendar is crowded
with his stage shows that have seen him circumnavigating the globe many times to the U.S,
U.K , Europe & the Middle East.
Comparison to the icon may have been flattering to the young singer but Biju Narayanan set about honing his own characteristic style so that today , 16 years & 400 songs later his voice has become as distinctive as that of the reigning deity of Malayalam playback singing. |
