T.K. Rajeev Kumar is a veteran director who has wielded the megaphone for over a dozen movies in Malayalam & lately in Hindi . Though not prolific, his handful of films have extra-ordinary storylines that veer away from well-trodden paths and tested formulas. There is nothing staid or commonplace about his work; on the contrary, his films are refreshing both in their theme and treatment, from Chanakyan released in 1989 to Kushti in 2007.
He made his directorial debut with ‘Chanakyan’ , a tale of vengeance in which the victim forces the villain to kill him ; the film which exploited both Jayaram’s mimicry skills and Kamal Hasan’s histrionic abilities made history at the box-office. His other noteworthy films include Pavithram which fetched Mohanlal, Filmfare’s Best Actor’s Award ; Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu that drew an incredible performance from Manju Warrier and Shesham which won the Kerala State Award for Best Film . Well grounded in the technicalities of film making, Rajeev Kumar pioneered many innovations - Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu was the first movie to use Avid technology ;a couple of his films were shot entirely with Steadycam; he introduced the immense possibilities of the Akkila crane to Malayalam movies.
